RESPONSE OF TOMATOES TO LOW NIGHT-HIGH DAY TEMPERATURES AND CARBON DIOXIDE ENRICHMENT

Abstract
Carbon dioxide enrichment (CO2) increased yield and cash return of glasshouse tomatoes grown at low, medium, and high night temperatures (5, 13 and 17°C night heat thermostat settings). Heavier yields were consistently obtained at medium night temperatures with CO2. The combination of CO2, low night and high day temperature (20° heating and 27° ventilating) was only slightly inferior to medium night, high day temperature with CO2 but usually gave greater yields and cash returns than low day (16° heating 21° ventilating) medium night temperature without CO2. Increasing ventilating temperatures from 21° to 24° without CO2 generally decreased yields and returns.
The effects of CO2 were similar for crops planted between February and August.
