DESIGNS AND CONSIDERATIONS FOR GREENHOUSES IN THE UNITED STATES NOW AND IN THE FUTURE

Abstract
Greenhouses enable man to conduct intensive plant production operations.
Currently they require substantial inputs of fossil fuel energy for environmental control and human energy for cultural operations.
Techniques for conserving both of these valuable energy forms are being developed.
Greenhouses of the future will be insulated at night to reduce heat requirements and alternative energy sources such as solar energy and waste heat from industrial operations will be practical and widely used.

In warmer climates buildings will be designed to provide for natural ventilation to reduce summer operating costs and energy demands.
Materials handling systems and other cultural aids will be designed into the structures to reduce labor requirements.
Mechanization of cultural operations will be greatly expanded.
Although it is difficult to predict the growth of the greenhouse industry, we predict that gains in productivity will enable us to continue to enjoy the beauty of flowers in our homes and the delights of fresh vegetables on our tables throughout the year.
