EVALUATION AND APPLICATION OF ECOLOGICAL SUITABILITY FOR LOQUAT IN DIFFERENT ECOLOGICAL ZONES OF SICHUAN PROVINCE IN CHINA

Abstract
Growth and development characters, flowering and fruiting habit, and fruit quality of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) were evaluated in three different ecological zones in Sichuan province.
In subtropical damp ecological zone, the loquat trees grew vigorously and shoots sprouted four times annually.
The flower buds were mainly originated from the summer shoots and the flowering stage most centered from September to December, a rapid growth stage of fruits was observed from March to April and fruit ripened in May.
In southern subtropical dry ecological zone, terminal shoots might sprout four or five times annually, flowers are borne in summer or fall or early winter in panicles at the ends of the branches.
The loquat fruit can begin to ripen as early as October and November and in an extended ripening period, depending on the weather and the artificial methods inducing flowers, the loquat may continue to ripen into March.
In the valley of southern temperate dry ecological zone, at the lower elevation, the ecological response of loquat was similar to those in subtropical damp ecological zone, but the phenophase was delayed 20 to 30 days.
The phenophase delayed with the increasing elevation; flowers are borne from fall to early spring in panicles at the ends of the spring branches, giving clustering fruit in June and July with more than 15% soluble solids content.
