Abstract
Calcium ions (Ca2+) and protons (H+) in the extracellular medium are essential for the growth of pollen tubes, both of which markedly influence the germination, growth rate of pollen tubes and division of generative nucleus.
The results of this experiment indicated that pollen of triploid loquat could geminate at an extracellular pH of 4-9, and germination rate showed great difference at different pH. pH beyond 6-7 generally induced abnormal oscillation of Ca2+ and loss in Ca2+ concentration gradient in pollen tube tip, and even led to anomalous growth or pollen tube rupture.
The generative nucleus in pollen tube of diploid loquat could undergo the division process at pH 4-9, but triploid loquat could not at high pH. The results suggested that the adaptability to external pH and the regulatory capacity on proton differ in pollens of different ploidy.
