NUTRIENT PARTITIONING IN ‘NELLIE WHITE’ LILIUM LONGIFLORUM AT ANTHESIS FOR TWO DAY/NIGHT TEMPERATURE REGIMES

Abstract
The nutrient content of ‘Nellie White’ Easter lilies (Lilium longiflorum Thunb.) grown in glasshouse under two differential temperature regimes (DIF) was determined.
At anthesis, the plants were divided into five or six segments of 15 nodes each, starting from the base (nodal segment 0-15). Segments were further subdivided into leaf, stem, and flower tissue.
Fresh weights were recorded, and tissues were analyzed for NH4-N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Cu, B, Fe, Mn, and Zn.
Of the elements studied, only P content differed statistically at the DIF treatment × nodal segment × tissue type interaction.
The -DIF plants had a higher total leaf P content with it increasing from 0.19 mg per segment at nodal segment 0-15, up to 1.34 mg at nodal segment 46-60, compared to 0.16 and 0.76 mg per segment, respectively, for the +DIF plants.
Significant differences also occurred at the DIF treatment × tissue type interaction, with -DIF leaf tissue having higher total content of P, K, Mg, Ca, Na, and B, while Cu was lower, than the +DIF leaf tissue.
Results indicate that nutrient distribution in Easter lily plants is affected by night/day temperature regimes, therefore fertilization practices and sampling of plant tissue for routine analysis should take into account these differences.
