Abstract
Within the genus Lilium, Lilium bulbiferum or “Giglio di San Giovanni” or “red lily” is a species with high ornamental potential; it grows spontaneously in Italy in some particular places.
It flowers in June/July with single or multiple orange/yellow or orange/red flowers.
It can be propagated by bulbils that grow along the stem.
In the Italian “Riviera dei Fiori”, Liguria Region, there is interesting niche cultivation of this plant but it was necessary to use the in vitro technique to restore the virus-free conditions after several years of cultivation in order to obtain good flower quality.
Meristems of sprouted bulbs were excised after thermotherapy (storing the bulbs at 35°C for 45 days). Several lines were selected and the presence of eventual viral particles was detected.
The virus-free lines were multiplied in a medium containing MS salts with 0.5 mg/L IBA. The multiplication of the plants was also performed by temporary immersion system using RITA® containers.
Trials with several IBA concentrations (0, 0.5, 2 mg/L) and with a growth retardant (ancymidol, 1 mg/L) were made with this material.
At the end of the culture period the multiplication rate, the weight, the height and the presence of roots were evaluated.
With respect to the control, the presence of IBA in the medium at any concentration reduced the height of the plants but increased the weight of the clusters, in particular at 2 mg/L. At this concentration, also a good root system was developed with an average of 6 roots per cluster.
The presence of ancymidol reduced the length of the leaves giving better performance in the RITA® vessels.
