Abstract
Sousan-e Chehel Cheraagh (Lilium ledebourii) is one of the rarest species of the Lilium genus which was reported only from one locality in Damash, Iran where it is protected as a natural monument area.
Since only one locality was known in Iran we tried to identify more natural habitats of Lilium ledebourii in Ardabil located nearby the first known habitat.
Micro- and macro-habitat characteristics of the habitat of L. ledebourii were identified via presence only data and using the Makhdum model.
Using different data layers and with regards to important habitat characteristics of the known site, potential areas of occurrence were recognized in Ardabil, a different province from the main province.
The target of this study was to provide equal environmental units obtained by overlaying stable and unstable ecological resources by using GIS software and fitted data in the Makhdum model.
At first the basic environmental factors affecting this species distribution were recognized and mapped.
Using GIS software and the Makhdum model, the environmental units were then extracted.
The main habitat characteristics which affect L. ledebourii site selection were (1) soil different characteristics such as depth, pH, organic matter, and texture, (2) Geographical Coordinate System, (3) elevation above the sea level, (4) temperature, (5) associated vegetation.
Overlaying potential known habitat data produced environmental units too.
Comparing the species presence units with similar units in the predicted model resulted in finding new natural habitats of the species.
The habitat of L. ledebourii is generally limited to east and south-east skirts with 1,578 altitude and high slope. Lilium ledebourii showed symbiosis with Laser trilobum and fern.
The estimated distribution area is 83 ha but the main aggregation area of 5,000 m2 is located in “Shoghal Dare” in the east of Namin, south of Minabad village in Ardabil-Astra road.
