Abstract
Lily has been considered as one of the strategic flowers for export to Japan since 1990. The goal of lily breeding was the development of new cultivars adapted for Korea’s climate and environmental conditions.
Conventional crossing between cultivars was applied for the breeding of Asiatic and Oriental hybrids.
To develop new interspecific cultivars, interspecific hybridization and polyploidization techniques were employed above conventional breeding.
Since 1992, a total of 65 lily cultivars were developed at RDA, Korea.
There are 36 Asiatic, 23 FA (L. formolongi × Asiatic hybrids) interspecific, 1 FO (L. formolongi × Oriental hybrids) interspecific and 5 Oriental hybrids.
To overcome pre- and post-fertilization barriers in interspecific cross combinations, cut-style pollination (CSM) and in vitro embryo rescue techniques were used.
New interspecific hybrids such as OTO (OT ‘Avocado’ × Oriental ‘Acapulco’), FA (L. formolongi ‘Raizan’ × Asiatic ‘A95-14’), FO (L. formolongi ‘Raizan’ × Oriental ‘O54’), OH (Oriental ‘Casa Blanca’ × L. henryi) and OA (Oriental ‘Casa Blanca’ × Asiatic ‘Pepper’) hybrid were developed at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science (NIHHS), Rural Development Administration (RDA). Pollen of interspecific hybrids was mostly sterile and the polyploidy level was either diploid or triploid.
Diploid interspecific hybrids were for in vitro chromosome doubling treated using oryzalin and colchicine.
The fertility of pollen of the chromosome doubled interspecific hybrids was recovered up to 40%.
