Abstract
Inability to culture microbes has limited the advancement of seed microbial ecology.
DNA-based identification of seed microbiata and thus detailed studies of seed microbial ecology are now routine.
The purpose of this seminar was to report results of recent studies using innovative techniques to study endophytic and epiphytic mi¬crobial communities of seeds.
Variations in seed endophytic content may be advanta¬geous if different endophytes confer resistance.
Endophytic Acinetobacter solubilize phytate in bean seeds.
Seeds within fruits have bacterial communities that are unique from those isolated from flowers or fruits.
Symbiotic bacteria colonizing plant reproductive organs such as seeds, fruits or flowers benefit plant growth by secreting growth promoting metabolites.
Members of these bacterial endophytic communities have potential for use as bacterial inoculants to improve plant productivity.
Phylogenetic analysis of the phyllosphere 16s rDNA sequences revealed diverse genera, including growth promoting bacteria such as: Burkholderia, Bradyrhizobia and Frankia isolated from the seeds and leaves at three stages of spinach development.
This suggests that plants may have evolved to transfer beneficial bacteria between generations by seed.
