Abstract
Concern has been expressed in recent years regarding nutrient losses from sand based golf greens, in particular their effect on water quality.
Eutrophication, which results in the excessive production of suspended planktonic algae and Cyano-bacteria is of particular concern in Ireland.
Only limited research has been carried out to study nutrient leaching from golf course greens, in particular newly established USGA specification ones in Ireland.
A field study was undertaken to determine the movement of applied nutrients in association with biostimulants through a newly established golf green.
Two nutrient rates were applied separately in combination with two commercially available biostimulants, Plant Health Care (PHC) 6:5:6 organic feed and Colour Performance Roots (CPR) 4:0:1 feed (supplied by Plant Health Care, U.K. and Milliken and Company, U.S.A. respectively). During a twelve month period, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium leaching losses were measured from lysimeters in the experimental golf green.
The data indicated that leaching of nitrogen is a problem at the early establishment phase of the green but reduces over time, whereas potas¬sium leaching increases over time.
