THE EFFECTS OF IRRIGATION ON MICROBIAL ACTIVITY AND CHICKPEA (CICER ARIETINUM L.) PRODUCTION AT FIELD CONDITIONS IN THE PROVINCE OF TUCUMÁN, ARGENTINA

Abstract
The expansion of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) production in the Argentinean northwest and centre areas has demonstrated the potential of this crop as an alternative of high profitability.
In the province of Tucumán has not been recorded any systematic studies of the microbial interactions on chickpea growth.
Therefore, the aim of this work was to determine the effects of irrigation on microbial activity and chickpea production in La Florida, Tucumán (Argentina). The treatments were: cultivation under dry conditions (T1) and with irrigation (T2) both inoculated with a liquid commercial inoculant of Mesorhizobium cicero. For microbial activity determination, the number of phosphate solubilizing microorganisms per gram of soil (CFU g-1 colony forming units per gram of soil) was quantified.
Soil samples were collected, dried at room temperature and sieved.
Serial dilutions of these samples were plated in N-Brip medium with three replicates.
The grain weight per hectare was measure in order to determine the crop yield.
The results showed that T2 had a higher number of CFU g-1 (1.25×107) rather than T1 (5.6×106). Also T2 treatment increased the yield 90% in comparison with T1. The results obtained lead to conclude that the irrigation of chickpea cultivars had positive effects on phosphate solubilizing microorganisms activity and the crop yields.
