Abstract
The Thematic Session on Mineral Nutrition aimed to highlight the importance of plant nutrition in horticultural science, with impact on all aspects of cropping systems and environmental sustainability.
Since there are aspects of plant nutrition that may differ between perennial and annual plants, the session was divided into two sessions, one dedicated to fruit tree crops and the other to vegetable crops.
The fruit tree crops session was moderated by Dr.
Jesus Val, Department of Plant Nutrition, EEAD, Zaragoza, Spain.
His area of expertise is fruit tree nutrition, with emphasis on calcium nutrition of fruits.
Presentations in this session dealt with foliar fertilization; contributions to improve the rate of penetration of calcium in fruit tissues by means of novel adjuvants or by the use of an electrostatic spraying devices; aerial applications of Ca(OH)2 to improve fruit quality; micronutrient requirements and toxicities; and interactions between mineral elements.
The session on vegetable crops was moderate by Dr.
Carlos Ramos, Center for the Development of Sustainable Agriculture, IVIA, Valencia, Spain.
His area of expertise is focused on environmental aspects of nitrogen fertilization of vegetable crops.
Presenta-tions in this session covered diverse topics ranging from the use of calcium cyanamide to the nitrogen nutrition aspects in several crops as well as the use of chloride fertilizers as a mean to reduce nitrate accumulation in vegetable crops.
Other contributions were devoted to study the effect of biostimulants in plant growth, the application of minerals to the soil to improve nutrient uptake, and corrections of mineral deficiencies in vegetable crops.
A total of 54 presentations, 11 oral communications, 14 short-oral presentations, and 29 posters, were presented and discussed by the participants in this session.
Only those manuscripts received and accepted for publication after evaluation by the Editorial Board, are included in Acta Horticulturae 938.
I hope all these contributions can enrich the knowledge on mineral nutrition of horticultural crops.
I want to express my acknowledgment to the Editorial Board for evaluating these manuscripts.
