Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of potassium concentrations on plant growth and macronutrients contents in leaves of in vitro cultured Aechmea blanchetiana. In vitro germinated and cultured seedlings were transferred to modified MS (Murashige and Skoog, 1962) liquid medium (2.5; 5; 10; 20 or 40 mM of potassium). Concentrations MS nutrients were achieved by ionic balance.
The contents of nitrogen, calcium, magnesium and sulphur in leaves of A. blanchetiana were reduced as the potassium concentration in MS medium increased, while phosphorus decreased from 25.09 mM K. Potassium uptake in leaves of A. blanchetiana increased with higher concentrations of potassium in MS medium.
With regard to plant growth, optimum concentration of potassium in MS modified medium was about 30-33 mM K, whilst higher concentrations reduced plant growth and showed toxic effects.
