THE GENUS ECHEVERIA AS A POTENTIAL NEW FLORAL CROP

Abstract
The genus Echeveria includes both single and multi-purpose species that can be of ecological benefit to improve the human environment by adding color and structural interest with very flexible resource requirements.
Species and their progenies vary by their size in shape of the rosettes, length of vegetative and reproductive organs, flowering season, the form and color of the stem and the bracts, the shape and margins of the leaves.
These attributes are useful in the design of open spaces as ground cover and in borders, as well as in the offer of individual plants and cut flowers.
It is possible to produce disease resistant plants by grafting Echeveria with compatible species (Echeveria, Sedum, Kalanchoe). The length of the rosette leaves increases the angle of stem’s departure from the main plant axis which increases the lodging of the stems.
The tropistic reaction of the plants or the flowering stems offers new products for horticultural and landscape uses. Echeveria shows a great potential as an ornamental plant (cut flower) that goes beyond the currently existing offer (pot plant) on national and international markets.
