ECHEVERIA GIBBIFLORA DC. – SELECTIONS AND FLOWERING STEMS RESPONSE IN CLONALLY REPRODUCED PLANTS

Abstract
Echeveria gibbiflora DC shows a very wide variation in color and form of rosettes and leaves.
Plants are suitable for use outdoors in the home or city land-scaping as well as in interior decorating as a potted or cut flower.
The flowering stem (FlSt) of a plant varies from 180 cm (large) to relatively small (60-80 cm). The lateral inflorescences (LI) were normally distributed and with regular presence of flower buds.
However, 1-3 buds below the first LI produced only 1-3 flowers instead of LI. Selections reproduced clonally by apical and lateral rosette gave homogenous rosettes and flowering stem characteristics.
Some clonally reproduced selections presented stems with abnormal distribution of LI, either in zones, separated by space free of laterals or where instead of producing LI zones 1 or 2 flowers were present.
In other clonal selections the LI presented zones with flowers separated by a flower-free zone.
Moreover, stems almost free of flowers were found.
These presented continued growth of the main axis or laterals.
Such appearance of spatial separation of LI by zone free of LI on the stem or flowers in LI affects the esthetic of flowering stem and the whole plant and puts into question the value of cloning.
The phenomena observed are discussed in relation to the generative and vegetative zones found in main stem of plants.
The frequency of presentation of phenomena reported seems to be related to the plant’s vigor.
