Abstract
Syngonanthus chrysanthus Ruhland is a small rosette and capituliform herb, which is distributed along the states of Rio de Janeiro all the way to Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil.
It is an herbaceous plant with very short stem with linear leaves.
Several stems are generally produced on the same plant, seldom only one, and flower heads are semiglobosus.
It is a heliophytic and selective hygrophyte species, typical and exclusive of coastal Brazilian restinga.
Dried and often dyed inflorescences have been found in the market as cut flower.
This work aimed to evaluate the potential use of S. chrysanthus as a potted plant and to set quality standards for the market.
After 46 weeks of growth, agronomic evaluation was performed regarding quantitative and qualitative traits concerning plant, floral stem, button flower and leaf.
There were collected information on the traits plant height, pot leaves coverage, pot-plant height, fixation of the plant in the substrate, plant growth period, flowering period, number of stems per plant, position of floral stem, main color of the floral stem, maintenance of floral stem color, insertion of the floral scape base into the rosette, disposition of the inflorescences in the rosette, variation of inflorescence height, minimum number of open inflorescences, mean diameter of the capitulum, main color of inflorescence, leaf position, leaf length.
The results showed that S. chrysanthus is an appropriate species for pot culture.
Regarding market standards it is recommended to observe the following traits: inflorescence height between 15 and 20.0 cm, 100% pot coverage, more than 20 stems per rosette, at least 15 weeks of flowering, inflorescences on three height levels, horizontal position of leaves, total fixation of the plant on the substrate, potted plant maximum height of 30.0 cm, minimum of five open inflorescences, no crooked stems.
