FLORAL EVALUATION AND REPRODUCTION CAPACITY OF DIANTHUS CARYOPHYLLUS CULTIVARS FOR A BREEDING PROGRAM

Carnation growers in the whole world, have to face the problem of decreasing revenues, due to the most important disease in this crop, the rot vascular disease.
The most effective way to solve the problem is to find resistant carnation varieties, thus, this research presents the floral evaluation related to gynoecium and androecium and the reproduction capacity useful for breeding four carnation varieties, two of them resistant varieties and two cultivars, all of them obtained thought a breeding program.
Direct and reciprocal crosses were made between all materials in order to establish in which crosses produced viable F₁ seeds.
As a result, the reproduction capacity of the six parents produced a total of 809 seeds from nine successful crosses.
Also, the floral opening stage II to collect mature and viable pollen was established.
It was found that ‘Kaly’, ‘Candy’ and ‘UM503’ were the best parent to receive pollen and ‘M226’ was the best pollen donator.
On the other hand, ‘Lady Green’ was poor in both as donor and acceptor in order to yield viable carnation seeds.
