Effect of AMF symbiosis and environmental conditions on growth of Asian ginseng

Abstract
Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is commonly used as a medicinal plant in the world.
The cultivation of Asian ginseng requires around 5-6 years.
On the other hand, biotic (diseases) and abiotic (allelopathy) factors induce a decrease in yield and replant problem.
AMF (arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi) promotes host plant growth through symbiosis.
In this experiment, the method of Asian ginseng cultivations with AMF were established and investigated.
In experiment 1, one-year- old Asian ginseng seedlings were inoculated with AMF [Gigaspora margarita (GM), Glomus fasciculatum (Gf), Gl. mosseae (Gm), Gl. intraradices (Gi)] and raised in a greenhouse.
After 8 weeks the rate of sprouting, dry weight of the shoots and roots, and colonization were investigated.
In experiment 2, one-year-old Asian ginseng seedlings were inoculated with AMF (GM, Gf, Gm) and were raised under 3 different environmental conditions [outside (OS), in a greenhouse (GH), and in a growth chamber (GC, 20/15°C)] during December to April.
After 19-21 weeks the rate of sprouting and the dry weight of the shoots and roots were measured.
Experiment 1 showed that AMF colonization occurred in all the AMF species inoculated plants.
Plant growth promotion appeared in AMF plants, with GM and Gf being most effective.
Experiment 2 showed Asian ginseng did not sprout in GC, but, OS and GH sprout occurred and OS showed a higher rate of sprouting than GH, thus, a continuous low temperature is necessary for Asian ginseng sprouting.
In addition, the growth promotion effect differed little among the AMF species in OS and GH. From these findings the plant growth promotion through AMF symbiosis was confirmed in Asian ginseng, and the effect differed with fungal species and environmental conditions.
