Influence of different rootstocks on growth characteristics of cultivars of the species Prunus domestica in nursery

Abstract
The cultivars of the species Prunus domestica L. have a wide range of distribution.
Their growing in different densities and environmental conditions requires the use of a wide range of rootstocks.
The influence of five rootstocks: Myrobalan (Prunus cerasifera seedling), Ishtara, Wavit, GF677, and GxN15 on the growth characteristics of three cultivars Čačanska Lepotica, Stanley, and Jojo was studied in from 2013 to 2015 in the experimental nursery of the Agricultural University near Plovdiv (Central South Bulgaria). During the study period, the lowest percentage of bud take was recorded for the Wavit rootstock (75%) with all the three cultivars, while for the remaining rootstocks, the percentage of bud take was higher (90-94%). Regarding the growth characteristics, all scion-rootstock combinations provided trees with acceptable size for planting in the orchard.
Our expectations about less growth induced by the rootstocks Wavit and Ishtara in terms of scion height and cumulative scion growth were not confirmed.
In this study, the seedling rootstock did not favor scion branching, while concerning other rootstocks there was no unidirectional trend in this parameter.
