Invasive insect pests in the Mediterranean region: new risks for the Italian citrus groves

Abstract

The introduction of non-native species into new areas is a global problem that contributes to the decline in biodiversity.
In the Mediterranean region, there has been a significant increase in the number of exotic arthropods introduced over the past 30 years.
These species are often introduced unintentionally through trade and the movement of plants.
In Italy, certain invasive species thrive on Citrus plants, threatening future production.
This review examines the most damaging invasive insect pests of citrus in major Circum-Mediterranean production regions and discusses the phytosanitary risks posed by newly introduced species.
Species are included based on their prevalence and economic impact.
Among these, the most harmful and recently intercepted belong to the thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), psyllids (Hemiptera: Liviidae and Triozidae), whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae), coccids (Coccidae, Diaspididae and Pseudococcidae), flies (Diptera: Tephritidae and Drosophilidae) and moths (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae and Tortricidae).
