Abstract
The current contribution of plant breeding to the development of tomato, pepper and eggplant varieties adapted to protected cultivation is discussed here.
The specific problems of these crops, currently on study, are analyzed.
The specific problems of these crops, currently on study, are analyzed.
Concerning the general problems of the genetic improvement in these species under protected cultivation, we consider the following as the most important ones: i) yield and earliness; ii) obtaining fruit set at low temperatures without hormone application, either through parthenocarpic varieties or by improving both the anther dehiscence and the pollen viability; iii) the fact of the displacement of varieties by hybrids and the future tendences in this field; and iv) the role of the interaction genotype x environment in the development of new varieties.
Finally, the possibilities of using the genetic engineering and / or the ‘in vitro’ culture techniques for the improvement of Solanaceae under protected cultivation conditions are analyzed.
