Abstract
From October 1984 to January 1985 a survey on protected cultivation of horticultural crops in the Algarve was carried out in order to establish production costs of a number of crops, among them tomatoes, which account for 46% of the area planted in plastic greenhouses.
The survey comprised some 80% of the Algarvian greenhouse producers and yielded information on farm size, land use, general features of greenhouses, labour, machinery, water supply, distribution of crops, inputs used, production levels, and marketing.
The most important general farm data and data referring to the tomato crop are summarized in this paper.
