Abstract
An experiment was carried out in three environments of South-East Spain both under plastic-house and in the open air, in order to study the relative behaviour of 7 commercial tomato hybrids and of a set of 52 derived lines in an advanced setting stage (F4 – F6). Production, fruit weight and fruit quality characteristics were studied.
The results point out that some of these lines offer productions and qualities similar to the ones produced by the hybrids.
As there is no clear advantage of the hybrids with regard to some of the lines, there might be a possibility to use such lines to substitute hybrids, which would bring about a change of strategy in the present tomato improvement methods.
It would be convenient to divert an important part of the present investigation effort, at least regarding public financiation, towards variety development, instead of focusing attention almost exclusively on hybrid obtention.
