Abstract
From October 1984 to January 1985 a survey on protected cultivation of horticultural crops in the Algarve was carried out by the Economic Section of the Portuguese-German Horticultural Project in conjunction with the Rural Extension Service.
The objective was to establish production costs of a number of crops, among them tomatoes.
Different cost items of tomato production are being scrutinized in order to look for possibilities to lower costs and to improve the competitive situation of horticultural producers in the Algarve.
As it turns out, fertilizer application and nursery efficiency are those items where a considerable reduction of direct costs could be achieved.
