Abstract
Shoot-tip grafting in vitro (STG) consists of grafting, under aseptic conditions, a small shoot tip of 0.1 to 1.0 mm, onto a young seedling rootstock growing in vitro.
The technique has te following steps: rootstock preparation, scion preparation, grafting procedure, growing grafted plants in vitro, and transfer to soil.
It has been used with citrus, peach, cherry, plum, apricot, almond, apple, grapevine, avocado, camellia and sequoia.

The main applications of STG are: recovery of plants free of virus and virus-like diseases; importation of plants through quarantine procedures; separation of virus and virus-like diseases in mixed infections, and studies on graft incompatibility and on histological and physiological aspects of grafting.
In this paper the STG technique is described in detail and the factors affecting its success and aplications discussed.
