Abstract
Wrapping the basal 15 cm portion of high budded M.9 rootstock stems with black polythene in July, increased stem diameter and induced both callus and root production beneath the wrapping tape five months after treatment.
Other opaque wrapping materials produced a much reduced response.
Anatomical studies showed that the blanching treatments which promote adventitious rooting result in the formation of a large area of meristematic tissue between the cortex and branch trace; these develop into root primordia and consequently adventitious roots.
Detailed studies are under progress.
The number and length of roots beneath black polythene tapes was increased by spraying the developing scions in July with daminozide or paclobutrazol.
