Abstract
The scarcity of peach germplasm with high levels of disease resistance suggests that alternative approaches to conventional breeding need to be undertaken to obtain resistant germplasm.
Both selection at the cell culture level and screening plants after regeneration were used successfully to obtain somaclonal variants of peach with resistance to bacterial leaf spot.
An in vitro screening system was devised that may facilitate early detection of peach lines with resistance to root-knot nematode.
Studies are in progress to develop an Agrobacterium – mediated gene transfer system for peach.
These approaches demonstrate how biotechnology can be extremely useful in solving some important agricultural problems.
