Abstract
Peach (Prunus persica) flower bud hardiness was increased with a 15 October application of ethephon (2 – chloroethylphosphonic acid) at 100 ppm.
Dormant flower bud survival after -26 C on 11 January 1988 was 63 and 32 % for ethephon and control buds respectively.
Ethephon alters the carbohydrate and water content of different flower parts during dormancy and these differences may influence bud hardiness.
In January, ethephon treated pistils had 72 % more sucrose and 9 % less moisture on a fresh weight basis than controls.
Flower bud scales from ethephon treated buds had 6 % less moisture than control buds.
