Abstract
The existing peach handling system requires harvesting at an early stage of maturity to maintain purchase quality characteristics during handling and distribution.
An alternative handling system was developed that offers the potential of harvesting a more mature peach while performing the packing function in the orchard (known as field packing). The results indicated that the field-packed fruit was superior in quality to the packinghouse peaches.
A more mature and larger fruit was realized using the field pack method allowing for better flavor and color development.
These results show the field pack method to be a strong candidate for consideration if the fruit can be handled, shipped and purchased by the consumer within a 7 to 10 day period.
