Abstract
Chilling hours and chill units are usually determined from a continuous record of temperature.
If such data are not available, algorithms incorporating maximum and minimum temperature data and daylength may be used to simulate the temperature record.
The temperature wave during daytime can be described by a sine wave rising from the morning minimum temperature at sunrise through the afternoon maximum temperature occurring two hours after solar noon.
The night-time cooling curve is a logarithmic expression dropping from sunset temperature to morning minimum.
Chill units calculated from these relationships compared very favorably with continuously recorded values.
These algorithms provide a convenient and sufficiently accurate method to follow chilling requirements through the season using only daily maximum and minimum temperatures.
These algorithms provide a method to develop probabilities for seasonal chilling accumulation from historical maximum and minimum temperature weather data.
