Abstract
Peach production in Mexico is on 30,000 ha with a yield of 252,900 mt, being located in the central and northern highland areas.
Several soil-born problems limit the production.
Rootknot nematodes and iron and zinc deficiencies caused by high pH soils are among the most important.

The rootstocks commonly used are seedlings called Criollos, or Nemaguard, Halford and Lovell seedlings.
There are no available rootstocks with resistance to both problems.

At the Hermosillo Coast research station, two selections named HR1 and HR2 have been selected from interspecific crosses of peach and almond, using F1 14–11 red leaf peach as the male parent and Ne plus Ultra almond as the female parent.

Field and greenhouse tests have demonstrated that HR2 is resistant to Meloidoqyne incognita, M. arenaria and M. javanica and HRl is resistant to M. incognita, M. javanica but tolerant to M. arenaria.

Both rootstocks are vigorous, red leaved and resistant to high pH soils, and are easily propagated by hardwood cuttings.
They have been selected also for their low chilling requirements which allows good production of shoots under warm climates.
