Abstract
Eight red currant cultivars were compared in Piikkiö, Southwest Finland, in 1983-1994 and six cultivars in Mikkeli, Central Finland, in 1990-1996. In Piikkiö the crop was harvested by manual picking and in Mikkeli by the Joonas Harvester.
The earliest cultivars were Fortun, Nortun and Jonkheer van Tets; the crop of cvs Rubina and Jotun ripened three to eight days later and cvs Red Dutch, Roteswunder and Rondom one to two weeks later than the earliest cultivars.
At both locations, cvs Red Dutch and Roteswunder were the winterhardiest and highest yielding.
The lowest yield was obtained by cv Fortun at both locations, and the poorest winterhardiness was observed in cvs Jonkheer van Tets and Rondom which were tested only in Piikkiö. Cv Jonkheer van Tets had the biggest and cv Rubina the smallest berries.
Cv Rubina had the highest number of berries per strig.
In Mikkeli, the resistance against leafspot (Drepanopeziza ribis) was highest by cvs Red Dutch and Roteswunder and lowest by cvs Rubina, Fortun and Nortun.
