Abstract
Earliness of fruit ripening is an important character in primocane-fruiting raspberry cultivars for Polish climatic conditions.
Investigation was made using a complete 5×5 diallel cross design.
Two summer-cropping and three primocane-fruiting genotypes were used as crossing parents.
Estimates for GCA, SCA and RE (reciprocal effects) were calculated in 1990 and 1991 for the following traits: scored earliness on primocanes, first day of fruit ripening on primocanes, approximate number of fruits per plant and percentage of ripe and full size green fruits of the total number of fruits, flowers and flower buds in the middle of October.
GCA and SCA effects were highly significant (besides SCA for first day of fruit ripening in 1990). RE effects were not significant a=0,05.

Among parental genotypes, Polana cv. was most suitable for improving earliness of primocane-fruiting raspberries.
Summer-cropping parental genotypes, decreased earliness and were useful sources of other characters, such as high fruit quality and pest or disease resistance.

Scoring of earliness was an adequate method in breeding for earliness, as well as for crop potential of primocane-fruiting raspberries.
