Abstract
Net photosynthesis, quantum yield, transpiration, stomatal conductance of leaves of two Vitis vinifera cultivars, ‘Pinot noir’ and ‘Chardonnay’, were studied in Northwestern Italy. ‘Pinot noir’ was grafted on ‘Kober 5BB’, ‘S.O.4’, ‘41 B’ and ‘1103 P’ rootstocks. ‘Chardonnay’ was grafted on ‘1103 P’ and ‘S.O.4’. All plants were trained to central curtain.
Measurements were weekly taken in July at light saturation level on 5 mature leaves from the intermediate part of the middle shoots.
Leaf area, chlorophyll and nitrogen content of the same leaves were determined.
The effect of grapevine was significant only on leaf area, chlorophyll content, stomatal conductance and quantum yield.
Rootstocks significantly affected some photosynthetic parameters. ‘Chardonnay’ vines grafted on ‘S.O.4’ showed lower photosynthesis, quantum yield, stomatal conductance and chlorophyll content than on ‘1103 P’. Instead ‘Pinot noir’ plants grafted on ‘S.O.4’ and ‘1103 P’ showed similar rates of assimilation. ‘Kober 5 BB’ rootstock improved leaf area, stomatal conductance and transpiration in comparison with ‘S.O.4’.
