EFFECT OF VIRUS STATUS ON LEAF AND BERRY PHENOLIC COMPOUNDS IN TWO WINE GRAPEVINE VITIS VINIFERA CULTIVARS

Abstract
The experiment deals with the influence exerted by grapevine leafroll-associated closteroviruses (GLRaV-1 and -3) and grapevine vitivirus A (GVA) on leaf and berry phenolic composition and field performances of grapevine.
The trial was carried out in Northwest Italy comparing in the field the behaviour of heat-treated and virus-infected vines of the same clone of the two red fruited cultivars ‘Grignolino’ and ‘Nebbiolo’. Agronomical and enological parameters, photosynthesis trend and leaf chlorophyll contents, berry and leaf blade phenolic content were measured throughout the vegetative season.
The results pointed out that the elimination of viruses induced in the berries an earlier and higher accumulation of anthocyanins without modifying the ratio between them.
A higher quantity of anthocyanins and catechins was found in leaf blades of infected plants whose photosynthetic activity was reduced.
These differences were more remarkable in ‘Nebbiolo’ clone infected by GLRaV-3 and GVA than in ‘Grignolino’ clone infected by GLRaV-1 and GVA. In terms of field performances the association of GLRaV-3 and GVA highly reduced the quality of grape but had no effects on quantity, whereas GLRaV-1 and GVA mainly penalized yield.
