Abstract
The hydrolytic enzymes beta-1,3-glucanases (EC 3.2.1.39) are known to be involved in plant defense reactions against pathogens or in developmental events.
Transcription of beta-1,3-glucanase gene was studied in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.): in leaves after induction with Botrytis cinerea, or in berries after mechanical wounding; and during berry development.
Northern blot hybridization showed that beta-1,3-glucanase mRNA strongly accumulated in grapevine leaves following infection with Botrytis. The transcript was detectable at 2 days after infection, and reached a maximum level at 4 days post-infection.
During berries development, no constitutive expression was observed during their green growth period (before ripening), whereas the synthesis of beta-1,3-glucanase was detected during fruit ripening.
On the contrary, mRNA of this isoform was induced over fruit green growth period in response to wounding treatments.
