Abstract
Major advances have been made in recent years in grapevine virus research, contributing to our knowledge and understanding of diseases caused by these entities.
Virus and virus-like diseases were known for a long time to have an impact on the performance of grapevines.
The understanding of the roll of these diseases is getting momentum in recent years as a result of intensive studies that resulted from:
Virus and virus-like diseases were known for a long time to have an impact on the performance of grapevines.
The understanding of the roll of these diseases is getting momentum in recent years as a result of intensive studies that resulted from:
- Advances and developments in molecular and various other techniques applied for virus detection, isolation and characterization and characterization of other entities such as phytoplasma, which contributed in the understanding of the molecular biology of these pathogens.
- The obligatory use of virus-free, or indexed, propagation material which is currently practiced in all EEC countries (Walter and Martelli, 1996), as well as in others, prompted the improvement of methods to produce virus-free propagation material as well as the development of reliable rapid detection methods.
