QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE TRAITS OF TWO NEW SPANISH STRAWBERRY CULTIVARS

Applications for two new Spanish cultivars of strawberry have been presented to Plant Variety Protection Register in 2002. They are named ‘Medina’ and ‘Marina’. During the 2001 and 2002 season, an agronomic and sensory characterization of these two new cultivars, in comparison with 20 other standard cultivars, was carried out at four different locations within the area of Huelva. ‘Medina’ is more productive and offers more earliness, a smaller proportion of second quality fruit yield and less skin firmness than ‘Camarosa’. ‘Marina’ has a very good taste and very high colour intensity; these two important qualitative traits make this cultivar very appropriate for direct consumption as well as for processing.
