Abstract
Susceptibility to diseases of strawberry cultivars and selections was evaluated in field trials during four years (1999-2002). Some cultivars like Honeoye, Polka, Karel, Selva, Elkat and Elsanta showed a very high or high level of tolerance to Botrytis cinerea infections.
The wide range of reaction to leaf spot and powdery mildew was observed among tested cultivars and selections. Dukat, Marmolada, Tenira, Selva, Elkat and selection 1476 were the most resistant for leaf spot.
Only slight powdery mildew symptoms were recorded on Dukat, Real, Syriusz, Florence and no symptoms developed on Filon, Jossee, Onda, Kent and Dana. In the last years, on some strawberry plantations, a serious losses are caused by verticillium wilt.
Many of cultivars, commonly planted for fresh market, are very susceptible.
A high resistance for this disease showed Dukat, Kama, Melody, Real, Senga Sengana, Seal, Jossee, Filon and 13 selections.
Crown rot is also rather new problem in Polish strawberry production.
Until now severe symptoms of crown rot were observed on fruiting plantations of two cultivars, Elsanta and Honeoye. Disease was also noted on some stock plantations.
No symptoms were recorded on Dukat and Senga Sengana cultivars.
The high number of Polka, Dukat and Senga Sengana fruits showed leather rot symptoms while only some fruits of Selva, Pegasus and Elkat were affected.
High population of two-spotted spider mite – Tetranychus urticae was recorded on Elkat, Elsanta, Honeyoe, Kent, Pegasus, Seal, selection 1248, Selva and Tenira, while cultivars Karel, Kaster, Polka and selection 723 were less infested.
The strawberry mite – Phytonemus pallidus ssp. fragariae was mostly noticed on cvs: Elkat, Elsanta, Honeyoe, Kaster, Kent, Marmolada, Polka and Selva. The lowest number of this pest was recorded on cultivars: Pegasus, selection 723 and Vega. The highest percentage of flower buds being damaged by strawberry blossom weevil – Anthonomus rubi was noted on: Elkat, Honeyoe, Kaster, Kent, Polka, Seal, selection 1476 and Tenira, while the lowest on cvs: Evita, Karel, Malling Pandora, Marmolada, Selva and Tarda Vicoda. European tarnished plant bug – Lygus rugulipennis damaged mostly fruits of Elkat, Evita, Honeyoe, Kent, Marmolada, Selva and Tarda Vicoda, while cvs Malling Pandora, Pegasus and Senga Sengana suffered the least of all.
