Abstract
Strawberry is an important fruit crop in Denmark and many other countries.
The major cultivars grown have changed over the years in order to meet the quality requirements of growers, consumers and industry.
At Pometet in Copenhagen, gene bank collections of strawberries (have been maintained for more than 125 years.
In order to determine if any long-term trends in quality changes can be detected, we performed a re-evaluation of a range of cultivars preserved in the collections.
The material represents a wide range of cultivars introduced over more than 150 years.
Considerable variation between cultivars was found.
However, no significant or systematic change over time in size, shape, firmness, calyx characteristics, achenes or in colour of fruits was found.
