HORMONAL CONTROL OF AXILLARY BUD DORMANCY IN STRAWBERRY – AXILLARY SHOOT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT IN IN VITRO CULTURES OF TRANSGENIC STRAWBERRY CARRYING MAIZE IAA-GLUCOSE SYNTHETASE GENE

The effect of endogenous and exogenous auxins and abscisic acid on in vitro growth and development of axillary shots of wild-type and transgenic strawberries carrying maize IAA-glucose synthetase gene was investigated.
The level of free indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in transgenic shoots was significantly lower than in wild-type ones whereas the level of abscisic acid (ABA) was comparable in both types of the plants.
Shoot proliferation rate was not correlated with endogenous hormones level.
Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) supplied to the medium significantly decreased proliferation of both transgenic and wild-type plants whereas exogenous ABA had no effect on proliferation.
Both IBA and ABA supplied to the medium did not affect axillary shoot elongation.
Exogenous ABA increased fresh weight of axillary shoots, but in transgenic plants only.
Our data suggest that endogenous IAA is not involved in control of axillary bud dormancy in strawberry.
