NITRATE-SULFATE RATIO FOR STRAWBERRIES GROWN ON PEATBAGS

Abstract
Shortday strawberry plants (Fragaria x ananassa Duch. ‘Elsanta’) were grown on peat bags.
Five ratios of NO3-SO4 were applied with the nutrient solution from planting until end of harvest (12:0, 11:0.5, 10:1, 9:1.5 and 8:2 mmol/l in the first trial and 13:0, 11:1, 9:2, 7:3 and 5:4 mmol/l in two other trials). In all trials withholding SO4 significantly reduced fruit size and yield.
For a short production cycle (winterplanting) the ratios did not significantly affect yield, fruitnumber nor fruitsize.
For long production cycles (summerplanting) the best plant performance and yield was obtained with NO3-SO4 ratios of 9:2 mmol/l.
There was a significant reduction of total fruits, misshaped fruits and total yield with a NO3-SO4 ratio of 5:4 mmol/l.
