STRAWBERRY GERMPLASM COLLECTION AT CIFA-MALAGA (SPAIN)

Abstract
The strawberry germplasm collection at CIFA Malaga belongs to the Andalusian Institute of Fishery and Agrarian Research and Biological Agriculture (IFAPA). The objectives of this genebank are prospection, establishment, preservation, identification, and evaluation of the genus Fragaria. The majority of accessions are F. x ananassa cultivars (247) and breeding lines (319) supplemeted by 103 accessions of other Fragaria sp.
We exchange resources with other collections and repositories to improve and enlarge the collection.
The active collection is maintained in vivo in pots with three repetitions of each accession and is duplicated in vitro to prevent any incidents with in vivo conservation.
We are developing cryopreservation techniques to create a core collection in order to reduce the risks and the efforts in the maintenance of the collection.
We are recording data according to the characterization panel of COST Action 836, WG1. In collaboration with others groups we are developing a database to integrate characterization data, photo-documentation, data about field trials of the European Strawberry Network, genetic marker data (currently isozymes but in the future also AFLP and microsatellites) and EST data in collaboration with the universities of Málaga and Cordoba (Spain). Together with the conservation activities, we are beginning research to improve our knowledge of Fragaria genetics through inter- and intra-specific crosses and heredity studies assisted with molecular markers.
