SOME FRUIT-BEARING SHOOT CHARACTERISTICS OF NINE SWEET CHERRY CULTIVARS IN HUNGARY

Abstract
High crop yield, consistent production and large fruit size are essential attributes for sweet cherry cultivars.
Flower bud traits play an important role in obtaining early fruit production and regular high yields.
This study was carried out in Siófok and Nagykutas, Hungary on nine cultivars in February 2005. Fruiting laterals were classified into four groups according to length (0 to 10 cm, 10 to 20 cm, 20 to 40 cm and >40 cm). Fruiting and leaf bud density was expressed as number of buds/cm. There were large differences among cultivars in leaf bud and flower bud densities.
Of the fruit bearing shoots, Burlat (1.10 buds/cm) and Germersdorfi 45 (0.61 buds/cm) had the highest and lowest flower bud densities, respectively.
Of these same shoots, the highest flower bud density was in the 0 to 10 cm fruiting lateral group.
Among cultivars, Burlat had the highest flower bud density.
In the 0 to 10 cm, 10 to 20 cm, 20 to 30 cm and 30 to 40 cm fruiting lateral groups, the lowest flower bud density was for Linda, Germersdorfi 45, Ferrovia and Sunburst, respectively.
On Van and Burlat, large numbers of double-set flower buds were observed on the fruit-bearing shoots longer than 20 cm.
Fruit bud set differed on the different types of fruit-bearing shoots, with the lowest value measured on 40 cm shoots.
The highest and lowest fruit bud set values were observed on Katalin and Germersdorfi 3, respectively.
