LITERATURE REVIEW: REACTIONS OF GISELA^® ROOTSTOCKS TO PATHOGENS

This review presents results found in the literature concerning the cherry rootstocks ‘Gisela 3’, ‘Gisela 5’, ‘Gisela 6’ and ‘Gisela 12’ and their reaction to diseases.
It includes information for viruses (Prune dwarf virus, PDV; Prunus necrotic ringspot virus, PNRSV; Cherry rosette virus, CRV; Raspberry ringspot virus, RRV), phytoplasmae (European stone fruit yellows, ESFY; X disease), bacteria (Agrobacterium, Pseudomonas), fungi (Armillaria, Blumeriella, Fusarium, Phytophthora, Thielaviopsis) and nematodes (Meloidogyne, Pratylenchus). The interpretation of the results is complicated by: the interactions between rootstock and scion, the impact of age and state of health of the tree, strong environmental influences, different pathogen strains and difficulties in drawing conclusions pertinent to field conditions from in vitro assays or inoculation studies.
Sensitivity to pathogens does not seem to be a limiting factor for the use of these Gisela rootstocks.
Choice of appropriate sites and adaptation of cultural practices often are more important for the incidence of several diseases than the inherent susceptibility or tolerance of the rootstock.
