Abstract
Four experimental plots were established in the north (Trento, Sondrio, Verona) and south (Cosenza) of Italy in spring 1996 to evaluate the performance of Lapins sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) grafted onto 18 rootstocks of different genetic origins.
Rootstock vigour varied with site, but the highest trunk cross-sectional areas (TCSA) were induced by Mazzard seedling, Colt, SL 64, Argot and MaxMa 97, followed by Pi-Ku 4.20 and Gisela 12. Dwarfing rootstocks included Gisela 5, Edabriz and Damil (GM 61/1), which sometimes induced inadequate tree growth, especially in the hot climatic conditions of southern Italy. Argot, SL 64, Colt, MaxMa 97, MaxMa 14 and Weiroot 158 showed the highest cumulative yields per tree, but only Weiroot 158 achieved very high yield efficiency in Trento.
The highest weight per fruit generally was obtained with vigorous rootstocks (e.g., P. mahaleb (L.) and P. avium selections, Pi-Ku 4.20 and Gisela 12), whereas dwarfing rootstocks (Gisela 5, Edabriz and Damil) significantly reduced mean fruit weight.
