Abstract
The contribution by Hungary to world sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) production is ~6% (50,000 to 60,000 t). Until the mid-1970s, the self-sterile ‘Pándy’ types were planted mixed with ‘Cigánymeggy’ type pollinators.
Later, hybrid cultivars from breeding programs were introduced.
In parallel with cross-breeding, in the 1970s evaluation of self-fertile ‘Pándy’ types began.
Their fruits detach from the stalk with a dry abscission layer, have a real sour cherry taste and are suitable for fresh consumption, processing and freezing.
Their disadvantage is that most are prone to produce bare wood.
From this program of continuing clonal selection, two clones have been the best: ‘Petri’ (R) and ‘Éva’ (T). Fruit quality is similar to that of existing commercial cultivars, bare wood does not form in the canopy.
