NEW SOURCES OF GERMPLASM USED IN SWEET CHERRY BREEDING AT IASI FRUIT RESEARCH STATION, ROMANIA

Germplasm diversity is important in the continuous process of breeding to improve cultivar characteristics.
Our purpose is to contribute further to the preservation of the national cherry germplasm by duplicating the national collection of Romanian and foreign genotypes from the Research Institute for Fruit Growing at Pitesti-Maracineni, at the Iasi Fruit Research Station (FRS). Research objectives include preserving, completing, periodically reorganizing and assessing the biological and agronomical characteristics of each genotype, the exchange of restricted biological material and the assessment of potential parents for characters useful to breeding programs.
The quality of new sweet cherry fruits was compared with ‘Van’. All new varieties have competitive traits, including very early ripening (‘Cetatuia’), early ripening (‘Catalina’), self-fertility (‘Maria’), distinctive fruit quality (‘Golia’) and late ripening (‘Marina’). All have precocity, productivity and high fruit quality, as well as good resistance to frost, drought and specific sweet cherry diseases.
