Abstract
The commercial sector participants at the 2008 ISHS IV Symposium on Persimmons in Italy identified a possible risk to the persimmon product development and a share of the international fruit market as result of reduced research funding priorities.
Grower profitability and supermarket shelf space is dependant on consumer demand that is linked to marketable product health benefits.
The promotional value of health and nutraceutical benefits of the persimmon is dependant on further research to identify and confirm those benefits and it is here that science and industry can work together to produce that x factor that promotes the persimmon to the fruit of choice. The symposium commercial sector participants agreed that an international persimmon group focussing on lifting the profile of persimmons through support and advise on research proposals that effect market acceptability should be established and a working group has been formed to do so.
