Abstract
The aim of this paper was to evaluate the yield and quality attributes of new tomato cultivars for use in breeding programs and to improve the assortment of tomatoes grown in greenhouse conditions.
Six tomato cultivars patented by the National Research and Development Institute for Biotechnology in Horticulture Stefănești, Romania were investigated: Arges 11, Arges 20, Arges 16, Arges 123, Stefanesti 22 and Costate 21. Tomato plants were grown in a randomized block design with three replications during two successive seasons (2019, 2020). The Notorius cultivar which is more spread in the region was used as control.
Significant differences were encountered among the different cultivars for most of the quantitative characters, such as time of maturity, plant height, fruit weight (first, second and third harvests) and total yield per plant.
Based on the results obtained from this study, the cultivar Costate 21 (5.42 kg plant-1) proved to be high yield under greenhouse conditions compared to other genotypes and control cultivar (Notorius). Arges 16 cultivar had the highest amount of pH, SSC, TA and Stefanesti 22 cultivar had the highest amount of malic (1.67%) and citric acid (1.54%).
